Today is May Day, the First of May, the day of ancient rites, the Green Man, Jack in the Green, the May Queen, maypoles, may blossom and Morris Men. It is drizzling this morning but the trees and leaves are vivid; even the stinging nettles, wild roses and forget-me-nots by the railway tracks are as green as can be.
